Six Months

Dear Isla, SIX MONTHS, this is unreal.  I find myself pausing a little longer when someone asks how old you are not, wanting to admit you are already 6 months, sweet girl.  Half a year, another milestone.  You're growing up way too fast and yet, I want to enjoy every moment.  I'm constantly falling in love with you all over again with each new phase.  Your beautiful big blue eyes and toothless smile light up a room, and especially my heart.  It's hard to remember when you were not in our lives, but six months already seems way too soon.  Words can not describe how much I love you my little bug.

6 Months+1 Day you were 14 pounds 5 ounces and 25 inches long!

Six months, means we have another well visit with the doctor that includes with more shots....

The biggest change/milestone that happened this past month was starting solids.  The first thing that we tried was sweet potatoes on August 18th.   Isla LOVED them.  Seriously, she couldn't get enough.  Isla had no problem moving the food from the front of your mouth to the back and barely spit any out.  Before we started solids, I got the high chair seat we wanted to use and had her sit in it a few times.  She is a little small for it still, so we have to stuff the space between the bar and her diaper so she doesn't slide all the way down.  Isla only sits in it first thing in the morning when I eat breakfast and do the laundry/dishes and when we eat.  She normally loves it and gets excited when I get the food out of the freezer.  I've been making her food so far, which I actuarially really enjoy!  We've tried sweet potatoes, avocado, sweet peas, apples, pears, peaches and prunes.  There was no way I was making the prunes, so those were from the store.  Isla's expressions when she tries something new is priceless.  She always looks like she hates the food, but after a few bites she tends to really enjoy it.

Solids have left us with more poops recently and also some constipation.  The latter is no fun at all.  Isla hadn't gone for about 5 days, and I could tell that she really needed to go.  When she finally did, it was very solid and she seemed to be in some pain through the process of getting it out.  Once she did, she had another full poop, plus another the next day.  The 3rd diaper had a little blood spot in it, and of course, I was super concerned.  I immediately called D, who had just left for work.  We weren't sure what to do and the doctors office wasn't open yet.  I sent him a photo and also called my friend that is a NP.  Having her in my life, for many reasons, is amazing!  She was able to talk with me about what I should do and look for.  We decided that she wasn't showing any other signs to be nervous about, so I was going to just watch it.  I also did call my doctors office and talk with a nurse there too.  She said it was just a fishline tear and to watch it.  Doesn't mean I didn't gain a few grey hairs in the process.

Still no sign of teeth, but that hasn't stopped Isla from always wanting to chew on something and drooling like a mad woman.  She's embraced the teething toys, especially the Sophie and the blue teething finger like toy.  She loves chewing on her bunny in her crib and any burp cloth/towel/blanket that she can get her hands on.  Recently, one of her favorite chew today has been her dad's fingers.  I mean, what sounds better than that?

Our schedule didn't change too much this last month.  Isla is still eating about every 3-3.5 hours, unless she gets in a really good nap.  She is eating about 5 times a day, plus solids.  I'm not feeding her an abundance of solids at each setting, but rather introducing them to expand her taste buds.  She also has been super interested in what we are eating and drinking, so I've let her lead the process.  She loves to drink a little out of my water bottle and grabs at every glass D or I has.  Isla naps at 8:30, 12:30 and a cat nap at 4-ish, depending on how her midday nap went.  She has taken a few 2 hour naps, but most are around 1 hour long.  Bed time routine starts about 5 minutes til 7 and always involves a bath.  She is almost too big for her little sink tub, so we need to really move her to my tub - one day!  This month Isla has noticed the water coming out of the faucet and tries to grab it, so cute!  D also loves pouring water on her head, which always makes her kick her feet.  She goes down around 7:30 and sleeps until 7 in the morning.

Her sleeping has been hit and miss.  Some nights she sleeps from 7 to 5/6 AM and other times she is up one or two other times.  She has been pretty fussy and finicky to get down lately.  She wants to fall asleep on my chest and will not easily get herself to sleep anymore.  We've tried letting her do some 'cry it out', but she gets too worked up and she can't calm herself down.  I am not opposed to letting her get out some energy, it just really hasn't worked.  I will also let her be awake in her room at night for 15-20 minutes, hoping she will go back to sleep by herself, but no luck.  Maybe I should be letting her stay awake longer, but I hear her, wake up and will be up until she goes back to sleep.  Some nights, I just don't have the energy to stay awake long enough for her to figure it out.  I feel like this needs to change or maybe she will grow out of it soon.  Here's to hoping, right?  Isla also told us this month that she was over swaddling.  Isla would arch her back and get all pissy when we tried to confine her arms.  So, now we just wrap the blanket around her body, giving her the secure feel, but not constricting her arms.

Isla is still rocking most of her 3 month clothes.  She is still our little petite thing.  Who would have thought with D and I, but we do have short statures on both sides of our families.  I have her in a few 6 month outfits, but most she is just swimming in.   We had a cold day here in Austin, and I realized I really don't have any warm weather clothes - eek!  So that morning I did some online shopping and hope to get her winter items stocked for this crazy weather we have been having.  We are going on a trip to Portland here soon, so I know she will need warmer clothes for that trip as well.  Kids clothes are so dangerous and expensive!  As much as I love them, I refuse to get anything at full price, $36 for a dress that she won't be able to wear in a month, no thank you!

We have one ticklish girl on our hands.  Isla gets the biggest grin, open mouth and a few giggles when you tickle her.  You can really see her squirm when you rub softly on the sides of her back.  When laying on the floor, she arches her back and tries to roll away from you.   Her laugh is still the best.  We were outside swinging one night while the pups were running around.  Isla absolutely loves seeing them run around.  I'm not sure what it is, but she thinks it's the funniest thing.  That night Steel was being crazy and she was giggling for a good 2 minutes.  It's seriously the best sound in the world.

I must say that I think Isla is a pretty lazy baby.  She really doesn't care to roll anymore.  She will roll occasionally from belly to back, but has yet to roll from back to belly (which worries me!).  I'm not sure if it's her (what I think is a) larger head or the cloth diapers, but this girl is content on her back kicking her feet all over the place.  She does love to stand and will let you hold her for quite some time on her feet.  You can let her hold on to your fingers and she is pretty good at balancing herself.  Her 'big girl self' is also sitting in the stroller, forward facing, and not in her carseat any more.  I rarely keep her in her carseat other than traveling and prefer to take her out and carry her or wear her when we are out and about.  Isla also likes to sit up, but isn't quite ready to sit all by herself.

Isla has done some of the cutest things this month.  She loves giving me kisses aka eating my face.  She now reaches out her arms when she wants you to pick her up.  She also loves to make all sorts of silly noises from her mouth.  Isla isn't constantly talking, but she does enjoy making noises.  One of her favorites is still when I put my hand over her mouth, while she makes the 'ooooo' sound.  We went to a trial music class this month, which she enjoyed.  She was more into the other kids and parents then what I was doing in front of her.  At the end they had the parents do that trick, and I instead had Isla make the noise.  Everyone loved that and she of course, did too.  I really enjoy having her around other kids, so I'm hoping to get her into another class once swimming is over.  Sadly, due to lack of napping/cranky/schedule, we haven't gotten to go to the swim class since the fall semester started.  I really hope that changes soon.  She does still enjoy the water.  The other noise she really likes to make is this silly screech.  I'm not sure where she got it, but I call it her pterodactyl  screech.

Sweet girl, this has been the BEST six months of our lives.
