Five Months

Isla dear, how did you get so darn cute?  Your daddy and I wonder this every day.  Your smile and your chubby little cheeks, that I don't think can get much bigger, melt my heart.

Today you were approximately 13 pounds 4 ounces and 24.5 inches long

No doctor visit this month, which meant no shots - Thank goodness!  I feel like Isla is growing like a weed lately.  I look back and her newborn photos and I don't even recognize that little munchkin anymore.  You are certainly filling out with full little cheeks, some adorable leg rolls and even a few rolls on the arms.  Your belly isn't quite as Buda-ish anymore.  Your hair is really starting to fill in as well.  We've started to wear headbands more, but can't quite make a hair clip/bow work yet.

Her sweet little laugh has become more frequent this month.  We've found a few things that really make her giggle.  She is definitely ticklish, especially on her ribs.  Daddy found that one out.  She also loves to watch the puppies run around in the back yard and that gets her giggling and kicking her legs all over the place.  She also loves when I make faces at her, particularly when I stick my tongue out or scrunch up my nose.   She isn't talking quite as much as she was last month, but she definitely has her moments.  Sometimes when I'm singing, she will start making oos and aws along with me.  She also gets really grunty when she is in her car seat and trying to go to sleep.  That particular characteristic is quite funny and I was sure to get a video of it to show her when she is older.  In the last week, she's figured out that when we place a finger over her mouth, if she yells we will move our finger back and forth to make funny noises.  I adore the little phases that she goes through regarding new tricks she learns.  I'm trying to capture them all!

Sleep, well let's just say it's gotten better.  Little bug is still sleeping pretty good at night.  She goes down 6:30/7 PM and wakes up only once between 7 PM and 7 AM.  We had one rough night where she was up for 2 hours.  I feel so lucky that she normally is a good sleeper.  HAHAHAAAHAHA - I feel like this was a mean trick.  I wrote that a week ago and now she is have such a rough time sleeping.  Spoke too soon, huh?  She screams and will not settle down this past week.  Two nights, she woke up at 11 PM, which is so unusual and it took me about 2 hours to get her down.  She is fighting going down like it's her business.   Now napping, that's a different story.  For a while there, she was not sleeping longer than 30 minutes during the day.  However, the last week has been a transition.  She has been taking an hour to hour and half nap at around 8:30/9 AM and then 2-3 other naps during the day.  A nap transition has been starting to happen as well.  She seems to want to be up longer, so we are going to try out 2 longer naps and see how she does with those.  Our goal is to get her down to two good naps, 9 AM and 1 PM.  She isn't rolling over a ton, so we have still been swaddling her.  Most mornings she wakes up with both arms free, so she can sleep with out being swaddled.  However, it does help to calm her down and get into a deep sleep both at night and in napping.    We haven't started sleep training yet, I'm trying to wait until she is 6 months.  I still don't mind getting up with her once a night.  I am thinking that we need to also start changing our bedtime routine to have her nurse before bath and then rock and read a book before going down.  I know it will be rougher, so I haven't attempted the change yet.  It's not like nursing usually puts her down anyways, we usually have to bounce her to sleep.

Teething?  Well, I don't see or feel anything yet, but this girl is just chewing on her fingers ALL THE TIME.   At certain points, she is trying to get 4 or all 5 fingers in her mouth.  Rarely does she actually suck on her fingers, she just gnawing on them.  She still doesn't love her pacifiers much.  I can get her to take it occasionally, but only when she is really tired in the car.  I did get a few teething toys that I think she likes more.

Isla is still fitting into most of her 3 month clothes and most of the 6 month are too big.  We've had to pack away some of her 3 month pajamas and have put her in a few 6 month.  However, they are still big and look like she is swimming in them.  She isn't wearing a ton of shorts/pants right now with this weather, but her diaper makes her wear a larger size.  She is fitting nicely in her little swimsuit and the GroVia diapers are fitting perfectly now.

This girl LOVES being outside.  I'm pretty sure that she would be out there the entire day if we let her.  She likes anything from swinging in the back yard, to watching the dogs run around or sitting in the driveway and seeing the cars go by.   Between that and how much she loves naked time, we might have a little hippy on our hands.  Her Grammy also got her a rainbow colored pinwheel that she loves to stare at.  I feel like her eyes are constantly wide open, just soaking up everything she sees.

Isla grabs at EVERYthing.  I'm pretty sure that Isla's goal is to pull out all of my hair.

Although Isla still doesn't want to be on her tummy all day, she is getting much better at tummy time. She is still pretty lazy and half of the time, she is laying with her little head on the ground.  I'll hold up her torso and she is able to balance on her arms.  I blame it on her head that's too heavy, so it's super hard for her to stay up too long.  This past week, I've also seen her more stable standing on her feet and actually wanting to hold that position for some time.  I was excited that she made this transition, because I was a little concerned about her not wanting to stand on her legs much.

Our daily schedule is still similar to last month.  She still loves helping me with our morning chores of dishes, every few days vacuuming the floor and eating breakfast.  Isla has become super observant these last few weeks.  She notices what you eat, watches you drink water and loves reaching for and trying to put her mouth on D's cold beers.  We haven't started solids yet, holding off probably for another month.  She is still nursing about 6 times a day.

Isla's favorite thing we do every night, right before bath time & bed is naked time.  She gets 30 minutes before bed where we lay her on the floor (with a water proof mat underneath.  Yes, she has peed a few times!)  and just play.  It's me and daddy and her make all sorts of faces, tickling her and getting out any of that extra energy she might be holding on to.  It's one of my favorite times of the day as well.

Little bug, I love seeing your little personality (although stubborn) emerge and feel pretty darn lucky to be your momma.
