Twelve Months

Today, my sweet boy, you are one year old!  If time could only standstill, or at least slow down a little, it's all just going way too fast.

Today (+ a few days... will updated post 12-month check up!) you were pounds ounces and inches long

I'm so excited to see where you are on the growth chart.  I feel like he is huge compared to what Isla was measuring at 12 months.  He has such a long torso, but in the last week I feel like his legs are starting to catch up.  He is so very strong.  This kid is full on, 100% confident at walking and even tries to run at times.  Most days he is sturdy, but lately (I think because of teeth) he has had some wobbly afternoons.  It's so funny, he'll basically just give up and he falls backwards on this head.  I'm not sure if it's just the balance (having a larger head) or what's causing his lack of trying to get his balance corrected.  We are working on trying to have him turn around to get off the bed and being aware of the steps.  He's absorbing so much, often times he doesn't have awareness of what can hurt him.

This last month went so fast, which is partially due to D and I taking a trip for our anniversary.  We were gone for a week, so that always does some adjusting to the kiddos schedules.  Overall his schedule really hasn't changed much from last month.  I still really need to start working on sleep training, but I have to get motivated first.  I know it will be better in the end, but it's exhausting getting there and I simply love the snuggles.  Fingers crossed for better sleep once he's one and those darn teeth are in.  We are still having him go to sleep in his crib, but we do stay in there until he is asleep.  Some days he needs to cry some to get settled enough to sleep.  Bedtime is just the hardest to not nurse him to bed.  Our time, just him and I, is so sweet and he's so busy it's nice to have some down time with him in my arms.  Again, I know I need to break this or it's only going to get harder the longer I wait!  I feel like Isla was more over nursing than L is at this point.  He's just a boy and always hungry.  I'm sure I'll continue to do the morning and night feeds for at least another month.

Speaking of, L is such a good eater.  He has started going through some phases where he no longer wants eggs (for example), although he was just eating them at least once a day.  Some of the food is more a texture piece.  We try to keep him feeding himself, which he enjoys playing with his food/dropping it on the floor and feeding it to Apollo.  He loves anything that is a carb, but I'm trying to make sure to offer him at least one meat, one fruit and usually one veggie for a meal.  Give the kid a pancake and he'd eat that all day, every day!  I also got some new little white cheddar puffs and he's loving those and finally the yogurt puffs.  Although there are times that he still forgets to chew, which is a challenge swallowing a hard chip.  Again, I think this is more that it hurts to chew with those teeth coming in.  Today I finally saw the left top tooth coming through - praise the lord!!  It feels like these new teeth are taking a lifetime.  He's been chewing and drooling and uncomfortable for weeks.

L is learning new things like crazy.  He loves reading books and I've moved his books down from the window so he can easily get them.  Touch and feel books are one of his favorites, although Bruce will always come in first.  He is adorable and will go pick out a book and bring it back to you.  He will hand it to you and then sit down, showing that he wants to read it.  Not on your lap, usually he just sits right where he was standing.  He can't quite say Bruce, but he has started doing the sounds when we say words like Bruce, bye, bus, etc.  He's got Momma and the Dad sounds down.  This morning he was blowing cherries on my leg, which I thought was funny and hadn't seem him do before!  L also has been pointing at things and even now looks to the air when he sees/hears and airplane.  It helps that the flight pattern for takeoff is often right over our home.  He is recognizing more things too.  He has always loved the school bus, which most mornings we are outside saying hi to.  He now knows what a squirrel is and will search them out when you say it.  Lincoln adores playing in the sand box and dirt.  He finds all sorts of rocks/twigs and even acorns tops or ones that have holes in them, so he can walk around with something in his hands.  He enjoys feeling things with his fingers.

We've started to work on having him go backwards down the bed, sit down for stairs and be more aware of changes in heights.  It's a work in progress, but he's figuring it out.  We were at the Mackert's for Easter and he rocked climbing up their stairs all by himself.  Lincoln likes to keep up with his sister and in fact, feels like he should do/play almost everything that she is doing.  It's been harder on Isla to figure out how to navigate his play and when/how to not have him in her space.  I have a feeling they will be the best of friends but push each others limits through the young ages. Lincoln loves and thinks feeding her food is the silliest.  She is often wanting to share with him, when he has the snack.

Lincoln is still happiest when he's outside.  Whether it's on a walk in the stroller or playing in the front or backyard, he could be outside all day.  He's enjoyed helping Isla and Grams plant flowers in the pots lately.  He doesn't like swinging as much as Isla does, but he's gotten better at staying in the swing.  On days he can get up in the playhouse, he's in heaven.  I must say, L doesn't put quite as much in his mouth anymore, but I still have to watch him pretty closely!  He loves when Isla gets out the chalk and we write on the sidewalk.  He does like to put that in his mouth, which he doesn't appreciate me telling him not to that.  Lincoln will let me know he's not happy about it, but usually can get over the frustration pretty quick.
